Obituaries for October 22, 2008

Michael Sestric
- Michael J. Sestric
Michael Joseph Sestric, 60, of Galt died unexpectedly at his home on Oct. 11, 2008 of natural causes. He was born in Pittsburg, Pa., on March 11, 1948 and moved to Galt in 1989.
He has also lived in Sacramento, San Francisco and Texas. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966-1970 and was currently employed as purchasing agent for Duralum of Sacramento.
Surviving him are his wife, Carole; daughter, Carlee of Galt; sons, Christopher, Stephen and Paul of Texas; sisters, Emily of Pennsylvania and Sheila of Florida; aunts, Jo and Betty, and many cousins in Pennsylvania.
Military honors were held Oct. 22 at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.

Errol John Gonden
Errol John “E.J.” Gonden, 56, of Galt passed away unexpectedly at his home on Oct. 9, 2008. He was born May 2 1952 to Rufina Martinez and Frank F. Gonden in Los Angeles.
His family later moved to Turkey, and then back to California where Errol graduated from El Cerrito High School. He earned his associate’s degree from Contra Costa College in San Pablo and then sent to work for Bentley Engineering as a plumbing draftsman. Errol became ill in his early 20s and spent the next 20 years of his life in and out of mental health institutions and board and care homes. He eventually accepted his illness and stabilized while he lived the remaining 15 yeas of his life at Rosewood Manor in Galt.
Errol enjoyed many activities, including reading at the library, listening to rock music, playing electric guitar, going out for coffee and outings to downtown Galt – especially the flea market and Carl’s Jr. He also looked forward to trips to the bay area wh ere he visited his family on weekends.
Errol was a gentle and giving person who had many friends in his life and was a blessing to his family, teaching patience and compassion for those living with mental illness. His family is grateful to his long-term caregivers at Rosewood Manor, who were his family, too.
Errol’s father, Frank F. Gonden, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his loving mother, Rufina M. Gonden; sisters and brothers, Melissa (Mauricio) Garzona, Dennis (Rowena) Gonden, David (Karen) Gonden and Suzi (Bob) Cruz; nieces and nephews, Christina, Alex and Erin Cardiasmenos, Antonio and Isabella Gonden, and Rio and Belize Cruz.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Lodi Funeral Home, 725 S. Fairmont Ave., in Lodi.

Jack Goncalves
Jack (Joaquim) Goncalves, 83, of Galt died Oct. 16, 2008. He was born in Raminho, Terceira, Azores.
Mr. Goncalves was a beloved and respected member of the Portuguese community. When he was 24 years old, he immigrated to Brazil where he went on to own and successfully operate a café/bar, billiard hall and bakery in Sao Paulo. In 1952, he married his wife, Teresa Wally Goncalves, and their daughter was born a few years later. In 1957, they immigrated to the United States, intending to stay for only two years. Mr. Goncalves then went to work as a milker on dairies in central and southern California. While the work was hard, he found he preferred farm work and the rural lifestyle, which was how he was raised in the Azores.
In 1966, the family moved to the Galt area to start a dairy business. One year later, they settled at their present location on Marengo/Simmerhorn roads. Mr. Goncalves was an attentive and hardworking dairyman. His herd was well tended and productive. In the 1970s, he was the recipient of several awards from the Dairy Herd Improvement Association for some of the highest producing cows in the area. He was a member of the California Farm Bureau.
Mr. Goncalves was also a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Galt and the Sociedad Espiritu Santo (SES) in Elk Grove. He served as president and helped with fundraising for the organization for many years.
Surviving him are his wife of 56 years, Teresa Wally; daughter, Solange Goncalves Altman and son-in-law Steven S. Altman; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Tatiana Altman of Modesto; brother, Francisco Ferreira of Hanford; and sister, Salome Correia of Terceira, Azores.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel Goncalves and Maria Conceicao; and siblings, Maria Correia, Manuel Correia and Jose Correia.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the excellent medical attention provided Mr. Goncalves by Drs. Mark Hoff, Melvin Flamm and Thomas Park, and the tender loving care provided by his caregivers, Nadir Anderson, Darlene Miller, Martha Obregon, Sandy Sharpnack and staff at Beverly Living Center in Galt.
Public visitation at the Ben Salas Mortuary is set for Thursday from 12 to 7 p.m. The rosary will be said for him on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m. Both will take place at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Galt Cemetery.

Mary Frank
Mary Frank, 88, of Galt died Oct. 15, 2008 at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born as Mary Baughn on Sept. 11, 1920 in Oklahoma.
Mary came to Galt 3½ years ago, after her husband died, from San Mateo, where she had resided for 54 years. She was married to her husband, Earl, for 63 years and was a loving mother to her two children. She was retired, having worked as a clerk for San Mateo County for 18 years. She was a homemaker and attended Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church of Galt.
Surviving her were a son, Steven Frank of Galt; daughter, Sherie Asselin of Redwood City; grandsons, Keith and Craig Frank of Galt and Keven Asselin of Redwood City.
A service was held Monday at Galt Funeral Home with Pastor Mary Sanders officiating.
Committal will be private at Lifemark Center at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo.

Eric Leeworthy
- Margaret F. Nickel
Margarget Florence Nickel, 90, of Galt passed away in Lodi on Oct. 9, 2008. She was born in Eckley, Colo., on Jan. 6, 1918 to Morace and Mary Florence (Mann) Eberhart.
Margaret came to California during WWII, settling in the Burbank area. She moved to Lodi in 1947 and to Galt in 1972. She and her husband started Nickel’s Auto & Machine Service in Galt, where she was bookkeeper for the business for at least 25 years. She enjoyed reading and word searches, and was an avid ’49ers fan. Mrs. Nickel held season tickets to the Music Circus for more than 50 years. In her earlier years, she was a Campfire leader for 10 years. She was a member of Century Assembly.
Surviving are her children, Gary James Nickel of Galt and Glenda Nickel of Lodi; three grandchildren, Stacy Nickel, Tracy (David) Malandra and Andrea (John) Sanders; three great-grandchildren, Joshua, Haleigh and Jacob Souza; sisters, Joan Morgan of Galt and Jeanette (Jim) Yarbrough of Nashville, Tenn.; brothers, Leo (Shirley) Eberhart of Arvada, Colo., and Glenn (Adele) Eberhart of Aptos.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Glenn Nickel; siblings, Marjorie Hoffman, Charles Eberhart, Dorothy Keeler, Donald Eberhart and Levone Eberhart.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi. No visitation will be held.

Eric Leeworthy
Eric Leeworthy, 19, much beloved son of Douglas and Diane Leeworthy of Galt, passed away on Oct. 7, 2008 in an automobile accident. He was born on Aug. 26, 1989 in Elk Grove and had been a resident of Galt for 11 years.
Eric had previously attended Fresno State University and was employed at Lockeford Springs Golf Course. He enjoyed basketball and was passionate about golf, a sport he embraced at age 7. You could often find Eric on the course with family and friends, perfecting his game. His exceptional skill recently earned him first place in the Antioch City Amateur Tournament. Eric was a loyal friend to many and will always be remembered for his fun-loving ways. He had an energetic, vibrant soul. His family and friends will miss him, his smile, his hugs, and the joy he brought to them. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him will cherish his memory.
Eric is survived by his parents, Doug and Diane Leeworthy; grandparents, Sue and Don Leeworthy and Bill and Lynne Clavin; siblings, Tyler (16), Sarah (13), Katelynn (10); aunts and uncles, Jenny and Alan Alford, Dan and Julie Clavin, Russell Leeworthy, Jonathon and Christine Leeworthy; cousins, Danielle, Brent, Michelle, Justin, Brandon, Madison, Devin, Zachary, Mathew and Paige; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A family service was held Saturday at Galt Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service for family and friends at McCaffrey Middle School. Pastor Rick Keiser II of Family Life Christian Church officiated. Burial was private.

- Era Jane Crane
Era Jane Crane, 82, of Galt passed away Sept. 20, 2008. She was born in RoTan, Texas Sept. 14, 1926 to William Bunn and Myrtle Lou Boren.
Era Jane graduated from high school in Blythe, Calif., in 1944. On June 17, 1944, she married the love of her life, Charles Wesley Crane. They celebrated 64 years of marriage in 2008. She had lived in Galt one year.
Era Jane was a devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for more than 50 years. She loved the Lord and served in various capacities with her church. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for her children and grandchildren in addition to her own wardrobe. She loved to garden and always had the most beautiful flowers for everyone to enjoy. Era Jane and Charles loved to travel to visit friends and family throughout the United States. Era Jane was a kind and thoughtful woman, who will be dearly missed by those who loved her.
Surviving are her husband, Charles; daughters, Sharon Clark of Acampo, Janette (Jim) Zintz of Kelso,Wash.; sons, Steven (Janie) Leslie of Barstow and Carl Crane of Truckee; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren with the 18th coming in January 2009; sister, Marcellene Townsend of Blythe; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, an infant son, son-in-law Jimmy Clark; and three brothers, Oscar Vincent Boren, William Arthur Boren and James Thomas Boren.
A funeral service was held Oct. 3 at Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt.

Claire Foster
Claire Foster, 52, of Galt died of cancer at her home on Sept. 24, 2008. She was born Jan. 17, 1956 in Glasgow, Scotland to John and Margaret Thompson. She moved to America in 1969 at 13 years of age.
On May 28, 1983, she married Kevin Foster in Martinez. She worked at Hartford Insurance in Walnut Creek and Bank of America in San Francisco. She enjoyed photography, genealogy and computers. They moved to Galt in 2000, and she enjoyed home schooling son Michael through high school graduation in 2008.

Victor A. Somile
Victor Albert Somile, 59, of Galt died Sept. 30, 2008 of liver disease in Sacramento. He was born July 8, 1949 in Walnut Grove.
Victor lived in Galt 34 years and Sacramento 25 years. He worked at Tri-Valley Cannery in Thornton and enjoyed fishing, family gatherings at siblings’ homes, and family picnics.
Surviving are his mother, Juanita Somile, 87, of Galt; siblings, Gloria Oyog, Alex Somile, Nora Reaves, Flora Perez, Anita Somile, Danette Ochoa, and Nancy Esteban; many nieces and nephews; and grandniece Abby of Oakley was his joy.
Victor will be missed for his big heart and his love for the simple way of life.
Services will be private.

Vera Garcia
Vera Garcia, 80, of Thornton died Sept. 30, 2008 in Lodi. She was born Nov. 27, 1927 in Jackson and had been a resident of the area for 60 years.
Mrs. Garcia retired after 25 years of service as a supply manager for Tri Valley Growers, Plant T. She enjoyed gardening, collecting ceramic teapots and enjoying her sweets. She will be deeply missed by all her loved ones.
Surviving is a daughter, Dr. Maria Garcia-Sheets of Stockton.
A Rosary and Mass were held Oct. 7 at Thornton Catholic Church, followed by committal at Galt Cemetery.

Arthur R. Fizer
Arthur R. Fizer, 96, of Galt/Lodi died Oct. 2, 2008 in Lodi. He was born May 5, 1912 in Liberal, Kansas to John Henry Fizer and Lena May Burley Fizer.
At the age of about 16, the family moved to California. Arthur was inducted into the U.S. Army Aug. 29, 1942 and served in the southern Philippines, earning decorations and citations, including the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with bronze arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, and Good Conduct Medal.
In the late 1930s, Arthur married Ricky Andersen. They were married for 50 years. He had a dairy on Orr Road west of Galt where he and his wife lived. Art had a love for playing pool and was good. He was always ready to challenge anyone. One of his hobbies was carving duck and goose decoys and then painting them. He also made duck boxes with his brother-in-law, Dolph Lahman, and put them in oak trees so that the wood ducks would have more nesting places for their young. He did this for many years. He was a man who loved the country life.
Surviving are one sister, Norma Potter; one brother-in-law, Dolph Lahman; and many nieces and nephews.
Art was pre-deceased by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
There is no visitation, and committal will be at Galt Cemetery on Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
Donations may be made to VFW or to Calvary Bible Church missions in Lodi.

Donald D. Ost
Donald Dean Ost, 68, of Acampo passed away Sept. 30, 2008 in a local convalescent care facility. He was born May 27, 1940 in Lodi.
Donald graduated from Galt High School and was owner of Ace Lumber Company for 40 years. He was a member of Ebenezer Congregational Church, Ebettes Pass Moose Lodge, the Corvette Club of Lodi for 20 years, and was a 4-H leader for 10 years.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Connie J. Ost of Acampo; children, Russell Ost of Elk Grove and Jyree Ost of Orangevale; four grandchildren; and an uncle, Ben (Lila) Grvozie of Lodi.
A private burial was held Monday at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi.
Memorial contributions to the ALS Association, 27001 Aquora Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301, are preferred.

Phillip L. Hoff
Phillip (Phil) Lloyd Hoff, formerly of Galt, passed away Sept. 26, 2008.
Phil served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He worked 20 years at Safeway and held a position at Galt U Store and was vice president of A.L. Williamson Insurance Co.
He was currently a deacon and Bible teacher at Sierra Baptist Church of Ahwahnee and maintained the church premises as caretaker. All who met him loved him, and he will be missed in the community.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Lois Hoff; children, Cindy Barber, Cherie Thornsberry and Michael Hoff; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild; mother, Ella May Dorn; and four sisters.
Phil was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Hoff; stepfather, Bob Dorn; and brothers, Frank Hoff and Charles Hoff.

- Ernestina Soria de Calderon
Ernestina Soria de Calderon, 84, of Galt died Sept. 25, 2008 in a Sacramento hospital of natural causes. She was born Oct. 31, 1923 in Cuto, Michoacan, Mexico and has lived in Galt 16 years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and taking care of her children.
Surviving are her husband, Merced Calderon Perez; five daughters, Rosa, Ernestina, Martha and Mireya, all of Galt, and Beatriz of Mexico; five sons, Ramon and Gilberto of Indio and Pablo, Merced and Roberto of Galt; 34 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church Monday with Father Copsey officiating.

F. Steven Lovell
F. Steven Lovell, 57, of Galt died Sept. 25, 2008 at his home. He was born April 8, 1951 in Worthington, Minn. He lived in Sylmar and Lakeport before moving to Galt 15 years ago.
Mr. Lovell served in the U.S. Army and was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Galt. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved being by the water.
Surviving are his parents, Vernon and Alverna Lovell; daughter, Brittney (James) Verros; son, Garrett Lovell; sisters, Roseann (John) Johnson and Leann (Jerry) Brunet; brothers, Rick (Marion) Lovell and Brad (Terri) Lovell. He was also blessed to have many other family members and close friends too numerous to mention.
Rosary will be said on Friday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m., at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church. At Steve’s request, he was cremated, and a celebration of his life will be held at Lodi Lake immediately following the Rosary.

Becky Moore
Funeral services will take place Friday, Oct. 3 for Becky “Grandma Becky” Moore who died Sept. 28, 2008 at home in Elk Grove following a two-year battle with cancer.
Mrs. Moore was born Feb. 2, 1927 in Los Angeles and came to this area, first to Lodi, then Galt, for many years and finally to Elk Grove four or five years ago following the death of her husband, Jim Moore.
She was past president of the Galt Library Association, active in the Galt Area Historical Society, St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Galt and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elk Grove. She also worked at the Galt Express Lane gas station.
“Grandma Becky was famous for her open heart and welcoming smile,” her son said.
Mrs. Moore is survived by her children, Gil Moore and Johanna Gorski of Elk Grove and John Moore of Fairfield, Iowa; grandchildren, Christopher Moore and Heather Moore, Scott, Kyle and Michelle Gorski, all of Elk Grove; and great-grandchildren, Monica Wright, Isabella Moore, Cristina and Ava Garcia.
She was the sister of Julie Pacifico of Ontario and Bob Barela and Woody Barela, both of Denver.
Friday’s services begin at 11 a.m., at Philomene Catholic Church, El Camino and Bell Street, Sacramento. A reception will follow at the home of her son Gil at 10676 Wilton Road.
Arrangements are by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Willis Ballard
Willis (lovingly known as Bill) Ballard, 68, of Galt died in Lodi Sept. 29, 2008 after a long fight with Parkinson Disease. He was born May 31, 1940 in Washington.
Bill came to Galt 10 years ago from San Jose, where he had lived for 30 years. He was employed as an electrician for 40 years. He was a member of Lions Club for many years and a member of Galt United Methodist Church. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Patricia Ballard of Galt; sons, Michael Ballard of San Jose, Willis Ballard of Idaho, Matthew Ballard of Loomis, Mark Ballard of Plymouth; daughters, Ylita Nielsen and Renee Ballard-Pinto; 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Clifford Ballard of Washington, Sylvia Westslock of Missouri, Ray Hager of Oregon, Kathy Western of Oregon, Pamela Roberts of Washington, David Ballard of Washington, Rick Ballard of California, Sharon Davis of Colorado, and Alice Morissete of Missouri.
His sister Eleanor Ballard and brother Ronald Ballard preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Galt United Methodist Church, 571 C Street with Pastor Craig Dale officiating. Committal will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacramento Parkinson Disease Chapter.
The family would like to thank the staff at Wine Country Care Center for the loving care of Bill for the last two years.
