Obituaries for June 4, 2008

Walter “Jake” Jacobsen was a longtime fixture at The Galt Herald, hired in 1959 when text still had to be set by hand in a Linotype.

Walter F. Jacobsen, 88, died at his home in Galt on May 29, 2008. He was born on March 4, 1920 in St. Paul, Minn.
He lived in Lodi for 40 years before moving to Galt 40 years ago. He worked as a printer for Abrahamson Printer in Lodi, and then for Herburger Publications for 40 years. He was known for his work ethics.
He served in the U.S. Navy, surviving the bombing of Pearl Harbor and earning a multitude of medals for his valiant service to this nation.
His daughters, Connie Pfeiff of Rohnert Park, Lisa Bauthreaux of Citrus Heights; son, Douglas Jacobsen of Sacramento; grandchildren, Janice and David Pfeiff, Jennifer Schmidt, Kyle and Zachary Tierney, and great-grandson Joshua Schmidt survive him.
His wife, Vonna Jacobsen, preceded him in death in 2001.
A chapel service was held at the Ben Salas Funeral Home on June 3. Pastor Paige Vorhies officiated. Committal with Navy honors followed at Galt Cemetery.

Wayne Patterson
Wayne “Pat” Patterson, 82, of Galt passed away on May 26, 2008. He was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Galt to Stephen and Alta Patterson.
A lifelong resident of Galt, Wayne graduated from Galt High School in 1943, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943-1946 and was a World War II veteran. He was in the Galt Fire Department of 17 years, captain for 10 years, and also served as fire marshal. He was a 10-year active member of the ambulance service with the fire department. For two years, he was chairman of the Cub Scout Christmas tree sale. Twice he was elected to serve on the Galt Sanitary District Board of Directors.
In 1960, he was the chartered president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and, in 1961, served as state director. He proposed and erected the first Little League ballpark and managed Little League teams for two years. He was elected to Galt City Council for 1962-1966 and served on nine of 11 active committees, acted as liaison with the local sanitary and water board, was appointed to serve as chairman on the local recreation board, served two terms as president of the Galt Booster Club, was awarded Citizen of the Year in 1970, and worked many years as a warehouse superintendent for Heieck Supply Company in Sacramento.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pauline of Lodi; son, Terry Patterson of Twin Falls, Idaho; daughter, Robin Novo and husband Joe of Herald; grandchildren, Stephanie and John Traphagan of Kelseyville, Joe and Christy Novo of Lodi, Megan and Patten King of Kentucky, Brendan and Jordan Patterson of Tennessee, and Jessica Patterson of Jackson; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Alta; and sisters, Jeanne and Doris.
A gravesite service was held May 30 at the Galt-Arno Cemetery. Ben Salas Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Kenneth E. Nemson
Kenneth Edward Nemson, 58, of Elk Grove was killed tragically on Friday, May 30, 2008 in a head-on collision on Highway 126 near Fillmore as he was driving to Ventura to visit his father and other family members.
Kenneth was born on July 10, 1949 in Carmel to Edward and Alvalyn Nemson. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1967 and attended Ventura College. He also attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he received a B.S. degree in biological sciences and the University of San Francisco where he received a Master of Arts degree in human resources and organization development.
Kenneth was devoted to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to Etha, his wife of 37 years. Kenneth and Etha were married in Galt in 1971 and lived for the past 26 years in Elk Grove. Kenneth was very active in his church, serving as a deacon, teaching Sunday School and serving on numerous boards and committees. His most recent employment was with the North American Baptist Conference where he served as a program director responsible for training laypersons for leadership roles in the church in the U.S. and Canada.
Kenneth was admired and loved by those who knew him for his patience, kindness and sense of humor. He was a scholar of the Bible and lived a life that was honoring to the Lord and an example to others.
His mother, Alvalyn, passed away in July 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Etha; father, Edward; and brother, Craig. Memorial services are planned at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura on Thursday June 5 at 11 a.m. and at First Baptist Church of Elk Grove on Friday June 6 at 10 a.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura.
