Orval A. Messing
- Orval A. Messing
Orval Arthur Messing, 87, of Galt passed away on Feb. 18, 2008. He was born to parents Joseph and Bertha Messing on July 26, 1920 in Nebraska.
His family moved to Calaveras County in 1927 where he was raised and educated. After graduating from Ripon High School in Ripon, he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Following his honorable discharge, he moved to Acampo, then in 1960 moved to Galt where he has resided since. Orval was employed as a fork lift driver at General Mills for more than 25 years, retiring in 1979. He was an active member of Galt Bible Church, serving as the Sunday school bus driver and an AWANA leader.
He enjoyed music and played in the Tuba Band in Sacramento and the Lodi Community Band. He could play any brass instrument and the clarinet, and enjoyed gardening and cooking.
In addition to his parents, his siblings, Le Roy Messing and Martha Geiszler, preceded him in death.
Surviving him are three siblings, Dorothea Gillet of Acampo, Jo Anna Wight of Bullhead City, Ariz., and John Messing of South San Francisco; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, Feb. 29 at 11 a.m. in the Garden of Trees at Cherokee Memorial Park, Highway 99 and Harney Lane, in Lodi, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Galt Bible Church in Galt.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 Industrial Way, near Beckman Road, in Lodi.
Memorial contributions may be made to Galt Bible Church, 801 Church St., Galt, CA 95632.
Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Shirley A. Carpenter
Shirley Ann (Uhrich) Carpenter, 47, passed away Feb. 18, 2008. She was born on June 20, 1960 to Donald and Edith Uhrich in Lodi.
Shirley graduated from Oak View Elementary, Galt High School, Delta College in Stockton and Fresno State University in Fresno. She worked for Weinstock’s Department Store and was a secretary for Ken Poore at Hume Lake Christian Camps. She was a secretary for Strahn Real Estate in Fresno. For many years she enjoyed being a homemaker since her illness. Shirley was an accomplished pianist and active in her church. She was a member of Campus Bible in Fresno.
Shirley married Norman Carpenter on Feb. 18, 1989. They made their home in Clovis. She fought a 10-year battle against cancer. Shirley loved her family, friends, home and flowers. She was an inspiration to her family and many friends and will be missed by all who knew her.
Shirley’s father, Donald Uhrich, preceded her in death and is waiting to welcome her to their heavenly home.
Surviving Shirley are her husband and two children, Brandon and Bethany; her mother and stepfather, Edith and Fred Ullrich of Wilton; stepsister Karen Whittington and husband Bill of Eagle Point, Ore.; stepbrothers John and wife Vicki and Kevin and wife Ann Ullrich of Galt; sisters-in-law and their spouses, Debbie and Kirk Pilger and Marilyn and Keith Schwemmer of Clovis, and Elaine and Chuck Taylor of Fresno.
A service was held under the direction of Boice Funeral Home in Clovis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Shirley Carpenter Memorial College Fund for Brandon and Bethany, Bank of the West, c/o Clovis Branch, 200 Shaw Ave., Fresno, CA 93612.

Vernon G. Hoff
Vernon Gottlieb Hoff, 83, passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2008 in Galt at his home of 55 years. He was born July 20, 1924 in Aberdeen, S.D.
Vernon (Vern) grew up in Eureka, S.D., as a small cattle and grain farmer and moved in California in 1952 where he continued dairy farming and learned how to repair televisions. He owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Galt for 25+ years and, after retiring, worked for Walker Hardware in Rancho Cordova.
Vern was often seen riding around Galt in his golf cart, enjoying the Galt flea market and Huisman Auctions. He loved gardening and always kept busy outdoors, tinkering, inventing and repairing things. He loved his family, his country and God. He was a Sunday school superintendent in the Galt Assemblies of God Church for many years and led inspirational song services of worship. He also enjoyed singing and playing his banjo which he did in church and with friends once a month at the convalescent home in Galt.
Surviving him are his loving wife of 60 years, Hilda Jundt; five children, Susan Barfoot, Gary Hoff and Clyde Hoff of Galt, Carol Jacobs of Bremerton, Wash., and Tim Hoff of Klamath Falls, Ore; seven grandchildren, Lisa Blount of Murrieta, Christine Lawrie and Misty Bell of Valley Springs, Jocelyn Hoff and Sharlyn Hoff of Galt, Jennifer Jacobs of Bremerton, Wash., and Dean Jacobs of Galt; and three great-grandchildren, Jackson Lawrie (5), Carson Blount (4), Caroline Blount (2) and Olivia Bell (1).
Vernon “Papa” will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and is sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Robert W. Amant, Sr.
Robert Wesley Amant, Sr., 67, passed away in a Lodi hospital on Feb. 18, 2008. He was born on Aug. 1, 1940 in Oklahoma to Jessie and Georganna (Martin) Amant.
A long-time resident of Modesto and Vacaville, he moved to Sacramento for a few years and lived a short time in Missouri before finally settling in Galt. Robert served in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserve, retiring after 30 years. He was a commercial driver, driving all around the country. He was a loving and kind soul and always took the time to help others, no matter what it was. He was and is loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving him are his wife of 15 years, Sharon Amant of Galt; three children from a previous marriage to Millie Dean (Clark) Amant, Christina Michelle (Amant) Kennedy and husband David of Modesto, Robert Wesley Amant, Jr. and wife Debbie of Vacaville, and John Dean Amant of Sacramento; four grandchildren, Steven Kennedy, Rebecca Kennedy, Daniel Kennedy of Modesto and Kyle Amant; brother, Charles (Buster) Amant; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; three stepchildren, James A. Nuehring of Hayward, Thomas Nuehring of Wichita, Kan., and Sandra J. Besch of Omaha, Neb.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 at Acacia Memorial Park, 801 Scenic Drive, Modesto; 209-522-0452. There is no visitation.

Gilbert Braley
Gilbert Braley, 78, of Citrus Heights passed away Feb. 23, 2008 in a Carmichael hospital. He was born May 25, 1930 in New Hampshire and has lived in Sacramento County since 1982. He was a master machinist and worked in the space program.
His first wife, Marjorie (Newton) Braley preceded him in death in 1988.
Surviving him are his wife, Loretta Braley of Citrus Heights; children, Carol Backert of Galt, James Braley and Cindy Garcia of Coos Bay, Ore.; stepson, William; grandchildren, Heidi, Larry, Tami, Jamie, Cassandra, Jesse, Stacey and Corey; great-grandchildren, Kristine, Alexandria, Kellie, Sarah, Clayton, Lynsey, James, Madeline, Samantha and Cheyanne; and great-great-granddaughters, Chloe and Isabella.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 1 at Ben Salas Funeral Home, 149 Fourth Street in Galt, with Pastor Frank Mack officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner’s Hospital in Sacramento.
