Gladys Farmer
Funeral services for former Galt resident Gladys Farmer were held on Thursday December 27, 2007 in Oklahoma. Services were conducted by her son in law Lee Lewis of Missouri.
The funeral was followed by burial at a cemetery in the town of Little, Oklahoma.
Farmer died peacefully at the age of 88, on Dec. 20 at the rest home where she lived in Seminole, Oklahoma, where she had been a resident since she suffered a stroke in 1995 following a surgery.
She was born Gladys Marie Farmer on Nov.20, 1919 in Bald Hill, Ok. to her parents Tom and Cora Nelon. She was a graduate of Sasakwa High School. She married her first husband Richard Townsend who was killed in an auto accident, leaving Gladys widowed with their first young son Robert Townsend.
She later married Lee Farmer of Atoka, Ok. who she met while Lee had been serving in Military during World War II. Gladys and Lee Farmer raised three children together, Jerry, Leroy, and Katharine.
Farmer and her husband moved to Galt in 1946 where they owned the Harvey Road Dairy, which they purchased from Mrs. Genoveve Harvey. Lee passed in 1976, followed by the sale of the dairy to the Fumasi family of Galt.
Gladys was very well known in the Galt community; running a small café on Lincoln Way, and known by most for management of the Galt Flea Market for more 30 years from 1953 to 1985. At her retirement, Farmer was commended for her long years of service by the city of Galt. Farmer lived in the Galt and Lodi area until she moved back to her native Oklahoma in 1988.
Farmer was active in the First Baptist Church of Seminole, Ok. where she lived. Some of her pastimes included selling at flea markets and playing cards with family and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Dale Nelon of Sacramento; and her sister Elena Tuttle of Henderson, Nv.
Four siblings survive her, brother Cecil Nelon of Oklahoma, sisters Polly Patterson of Galt, Joann Marquis of Oklahoma, and Peggy Jackson of Oklahoma. She is also survived by her four children, Bob Townsend of Idaho, Jerry Farmer, (previous resident of Galt, now of Oklahoma), Leroy Farmer of Washington, and Kathy Lewis of Missouri; 12 grandchildren, including Shawn Farmer of Galt, ten great-grandchildren, including Kalyn, Kristian, and Megan Farmer of Galt, and two great-great grandchildren survive her.
Gladys will be remembered and respected by many that knew her for her tough, but generous character, and dedication to everything she was involved in. Her family will remember her as the loving mother, sister, and grandmother that she was.
We will all miss you.
