Prudencio M. Ombrete
Prudencio Magalong Ombrete of Galt died on Sept. 13, 2007 in an accident. He was born on June 21, 1924 in Alcala Pangasinan, Philippines. He was raised on a coconut farm. He worked the farm and fished to provide for the family.
At his sister’s wedding, he met her husband’s niece, a beautiful young woman named Edovegis “Bing” Bautista. Prudencio and Bing were married on April 28, 1943. They have been married over 64 years.
When Japan invaded the Philippines in 1941, World War II came along and disrupted their lives. Prudencio served his country and joined the U.S. Army, serving in Okinawa, Japan. He received an honorable discharge on May 25, 1949.
After the war, Prudencio returned to his wife and family in the Philippines where he worked as a rice farmer. Life was very difficult for their family. Their farm raised just enough food to feed their family. For the next 40 years, Prudencio worked hard and watched his family grow.
In 1994, at the age of 70, Prudencio decided to move to the U.S., a very long and difficult task at best, considering all the red tape involved. He had to leave his wife of 51 years, and his family, in the Philippines while he got established. His desire was to better provide for his family. After saving for over a year, he was able to bring Bing to the United States to join him.
When he came to the U.S., Prudencio lived in San Jose. He and Bing eventually moved to Lodi and then to Galt.
Together they have continued to work in the hopes of being able to bring other family members to the states to join them. However, the events of 9/11 have made this much more difficult.
Surviving him is his wife Bing of Galt, their eight children all of which reside in the Philippines. They have 47 grandchildren and over 20 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at the Galt Cemetery at 10 on Sept. 27, followed by a memorial service held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 11 a.m.
