Maria M. Toledo
- Clifford D. Smothermon
A gathering to celebrate the life of Clifford Dean Smothermon, a longtime resident of Wilton, was held May 12. Mr. Smothermon, 69, died suddenly May 4, 2007.
He was born June 3, 1937 in Sudan, Texas to Clifford and Velma Smothermon. He grew up in Tulare and came to Wilton about 49 years ago, and worked for the state as a carpenter/supervisor.
Family and friends, who knew him as Dean, said he loved playing the guitar and going to car shows, including showing off the various cars he owned. He was retired, and spent a good deal of time remodeling his house and RV traveling.
His wife Janet preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of three years, Patricia of Wilton; daughters, Kim Pettit and husband Tony of Elk Grove, Kelly Craig and husband David, and Tracy Callahan and husband Johnny, all of Wilton; and grandchildren, Lindsey, Kevin, Kasey, Steven, Alyssa and Kyle.
Mr. Smothermon was the brother of Donald and wife Joycelyn of North Highlands, Joyce and husband Tony of Reno, Kathy and husband Ronnie of Elk Grove, Delos and wife Marilyn of Wilton, and Arlene and husband Bruce of Sacramento. Many nieces and nephews also survive him.
No services were held at his request.

Maria M. Toledo
Maria Machado Toledo passed away on May 11, 2007. She was born on June 4, 1929 in St. Isabel, Brazil to Manuel and Cecilia Machado.
Maria married John Toledo on Jan. 31, 1952. In 1955 they moved to the United States settling in Artesia, then moving to Galt in 1966. Together with her husband, Maria was a business partner for the Toledo Dairy. Maria was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, UPEC, and Our Lady of Fatima of Thornton. She loved America and was very proud to become a U.S. citizen several years ago. Maria loved to travel. She often made trips to Brazil to visit her sisters and loved to go on cruises. She also enjoyed gardening and cooking, but most importantly, she loved her family.
Maria is survived by her daughter, Mary Toledo of Galt; son, Anthony (Mary) Toledo of Galt; grandchildren, Joe Machado, Christina (Noah) Levinson, Jeanette Toledo, Brian Toledo and Anthony Toledo; and five sisters, Isabel, Joaquina, Alice and Hercelia, all of Brazil, and Vigilina (Jose) Martins of Artesia.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 48 years, John Toledo; brother, Jose Machado; and sister, Alizeda.
Friends are invited to visit on Wednesday, May 16 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Lodi Funeral Home. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with committal to immediately follow at Cherokee Memorial Park. A virtual register can be signed at www.lodifuneralhome.com where memories may be shared.

Guadalupe C. Tapia
Guadalupe C. Tapia passed away peacefully on May 3, 2007. She was born May 11, 1937 in Mexico City.
Lupita, as she was known, lived in Galt since 1974. She was a very dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was known for her boundless love, warmth, generosity and affection for family and friends. She was an active member of the Las Vinas Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Galt.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Salvador Tapia and daughter, Claudia Tapia.
Lupita leaves behind daughters Lupe Vega, Susan Padilla, Carmen Tapia, Leticia Tapia, Terry Tapia, Michelle Tapia, Georgina De Los Angeles, Marie Sansores (daughter-in-law); sons, Adolfo Sansores and Salvador Tapia, Jr., Oscar Padilla (son-in-law); 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; three sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
Lupe, Mom, Grandma, Lita, Tia, Guada, Lupita will always be loved deeply and remembered as a beautiful person with a warm smile.

Ricardo Diaz
Ricardo Diaz, 12, of Galt died May 10, 2007 at a Sacramento hospital following a brief illness. He was born Oct. 5, 1994 in Stockton and lived in Galt 12 years.
Ricardo was in the seventh grade at Greer Middle School and enjoyed soccer, music, drawing, bike riding and his puppy, Doo.
Surviving him are his parents, Jose J. and Rafaela Diaz of Galt; brother, Jose Dias, Jr.; sisters, Maria, Gabriela and Veronica Diaz, all of Galt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial was held May 14 at St. Christopher’s with burial following at Galt Cemetery. Ben Salas Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
