Karen L. Salas
- Ivan F. Smith
Ivan F. Smith (88) of Galt died on Nov. 8, 2006 of heart failure. He was born April 7, 1918 in Rolfe, Iowa.
Mr. Smith came to this area 13 years ago, after residing in Lake Okoboji, Iowa, Corona, Calif., and South Lake Tahoe, Calif. With a bachelor’s degree in the sciences and a master’s degree in education, he taught high school and worked in administration for 38 years. He was a veteran of World War II and recipient of a Medal of Honor.
He enjoyed gardening, camping, traveling and reading about the history of trains and tractors. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Surviving him are daughters, Kris Smith and Margo Carrell; sons-in-law, Richard Woods and Nick Carrell; and two Carrell granddaughters.
In his honor, a memorial party and tree planting at Lake Tahoe will take place sometime during the spring.
Ben Salas Funeral Home was in charge of final arrangements.

Gladys P. Niemeyer
Gladys Virginia Pilares Niemeyer (87) passed away Nov. 4, 2006 at Linn Manor Nursing Home in Marion, Iowa. She was born July 6, 1919 in Honolulu, Hawaii to August and Augusta Pilares.
She married the love of her life, Irving H.C. Niemeyer, on Aug. 15, 1937 in Berkeley. She worked in Honolulu and Santa Clara as a homemaker and enthusiastic gardener. She and Irving enjoyed dancing and traveling for many years until his passing in 1984. She was a past member of the Los Gatos Elk Lodge until she moved to Marion, Iowa to live with her grandson, David, and his family in 2002.
Gladys will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife; kind, passionate mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She spoke of Irving daily and now is happily beside him once again.
Surviving Gladys are her children, Raoul Kalani (Pennie) Neimeyer of Galt, Gail Niemeyer of Honolulu and Dennis (Chris) Niemeyer of San Jose; grandchildren, Nina, Kirk, Lance, Lia, David, Ian and Kristin; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces, Marvis (Atul) Maharaja and Marilyn Fey; plus great nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Irving; three sisters, Helen Edwards, Evelyn Guidotti and Virginia Pilares; brother, August Pilares, Jr.; and great-niece, Elizabeth Ewing.
Memorials may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Assn. Following cremation, her ashes were scattered in Honolulu.

Karen L. Salas
Karen Louise Salas, formerly of Lodi, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 59 on Dec. 1, 2006 in Woodland. She was born in Lodi on Jan. 3, 1947 to Merrie Louise Buchanan and Ben Salas.
After attending Lodi Seventh-day Adventist schools, she worked for a number of years in management and reception work, most recently for the last 19 years for Kaiser Hospital. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She loved to travel and enjoyed long scenic drives to Tahoe and the coast.
Most importantly, she loved to be with her family, particularly her grandchildren. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend to many. She will be dearly missed.
Karen is survived by her son, Keith David (Diana) Keller of Pleasanton; daughter, Gina (James) McGregor of Woodland; two grandchildren, Amanda and Cheyenne McGregor; mother, Merrie Louise Johnson of Woodland; brothers, Larry (Tammie) Salas of Coarse Gold; and nephew, Robby Salas of Alabama.
Her father, Ben Salas and former husband, Harvey Gene Keller preceded her in death.
Friends are invited to visit Wednesday, Dec. 6, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Lodi Funeral Home.
A chapel service will beheld Thursday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with committal to immediately follow.

Dr. Howard Gabriel III
Dr. Howard W. Gabriel III, PhD, of Galt, passed away unexpectedly, at the age of 59, on November 25, 2006 in Kern County California, due to heart failure. He was returning from a Thanksgiving visit with family when the Lord called him home.
Howard was born in Berkeley, CA on December 28, 1946 to Howard Jr. and Lorraine Gabriel. He was a graduate of Highlands High in Sacramento. He worked as a Boys Town Counselor while attending the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Health Education from Eastern Washington University. While working on his Masters Degree in Education at Northern Michigan University, he was a Health Instructor at the University. He later went on to earn his Doctoral Degree in Health Administration from the University of Utah. Howard worked as a Public Health Administrator for 11 years in both Wichita, Kansas and Ketchikan, Alaska.Upon returning to California in 1983, he returned to the education field and was currently a teacher at Charles A. Jones Skills and Business Education Center in Sacramento.
He had a passion for writing and publishing his stories on his Blog. He loved music, animals, telling stories, and making people laugh. His sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife Mona of 32 years, his daughter Anna and his son Howard, both of Riverside, CA, his mother, Lorraine Gabriel of Sacramento, CA, his sister Linda Kniess and her husband Scott of Fountain, CO, his mother-in-law, Maxine Prather of Arkansas City, KS, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Audrey Somes, his father, Howard Gabriel Jr., his sister, Nancy Gabriel Hintz, and his father-in-law, Elvin Prather.
Friends are welcome for visitation Saturday, Dec. 2 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. or Monday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are invited to attend Services Monday at 4pm at NICOLETTI, CULJIS & HERBERGER Funeral Home, 5401 Folsom Blvd., 451-7284. Private interment, Galt Cemetery, Galt, CA
